MERLIN
Merlin is a character that I created using Antonio Stappaerts concept art as a main inspiration, in all creations it is normal that we put a little of ourselves, of our worldview, tastes and also our art style, but always with balance to not distort the orignal inspiration.
When I created Merlin my intention was step out of my comfort zone a little, I wanted to create something that I never thought of creating before, that's when I found Antonio's Concept!
I was fascinated about the felling that he could transmite in his character, I feel inspired to make my version of the Character!
Sculpting was one of my favorite parts in every project, It's difficult but rewarding, especially when you can say "I did it!" Merlin's sculpture was difficult the angle of the concept was not the best for this type of project, but the concept was perfect, filling the gaps in the images with my imagination, constantly comparing the angles, the shapes, the height of the elements with the concept, allowed me to achieve this result in ZBrush sculpt.
This render was taken during the sculpting process. I used it to compare with the concept and look for areas to improve!
When I made Merlin I already had some knowledge and experience, but nothing deep yet, I have always been already good at sculpting and texture, but retopology was something that I didn't have the knowledge that I have today, The beard topology density is something that I didn't realize was poor at the time, everything else had a great density, but the beard was very inconsistent and I can admit that, This is something that catches my eye immediately these days.
The texture was hand painted by me in Substance Painter, it was my first time doing a cartoon texture with such profissionalism, I couldn't find some good references for the textures, so I mainly used Antonio's Concept, along with my feelings and intuition, as references!
It was difficult due to my inexperience with this type of textures, but despite that, I was able to achieve a result that satisfies me!
